Editor announced for Journal of Graduate Medical Education

CHICAGO, June 1, 2010 –The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is pleased to announce Gail M. Sullivan, MD, MPH, FACP as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME), the first peer-reviewed journal focused on the education of medical residents and fellows and the settings in which it occurs.

“Dr. Sullivan has strong credentials as an editor and an educator, along with a seasoned understanding of the issues in graduate medical education.  We feel her experience and interests are a good match for JGME,” said Debra F. Weinstein, MD, chair of the Journal Oversight Committee that led the search for the editor-in-chief

Dr. Sullivan is the associate director for education at the University of Connecticut Center on Aging as well as professor and program director of the geriatric medicine fellowship at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington.

The Journal is of interest to members of the GME community, including program directors, graduate medical education leaders, faculty, learners and researchers. It serves as a vehicle for the dissemination of research, innovation and scholarship in graduate medical education.

“It is thrilling to have the opportunity to shape a new journal to meet the needs of the graduate medical education community,” stated Dr. Sullivan.  “I want the Journal of Graduate Medical Education to become the primary source for program directors and teachers to learn about new, valid educational strategies, as well as for how to strengthen their own educational research goals.”

Dr. Sullivan has a rich and extensive editorial background with medical journals including her current position as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, and editor-in-chief of the Geriatric Review Syllabus, 7th edition and Case-based Geriatrics Review, 2nd edition.  She has been a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Chronic Diseases, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, and the Geriatric Medicine Section of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine’s Educational Clearinghouse.

Dr. Sullivan’s career has focused on developing and evaluating transportable educational experiences and products for generalists. She has received funding for numerous educational research projects, including systematic reviews, evaluation tool assessment, and web-based products.

Previously Dr. Sullivan worked with the ACGME as a subspecialty program reviewer for geriatric medicine (internal medicine). She also has served the graduate medical education community as a member of the American Geriatrics Society and Association of Program Directors for Geriatric Academic Programs’ Fellowship Requirements Review Committee for the Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine.

JGME is mailed to 10,000 qualified recipients, including program directors and designated institutional officials at accredited programs and institutions throughout the United States, and to members of ACGME Board of Directors and Review Committees.  It is also available by subscription. For rate information, contact jgme@acgme.org.  The inaugural issue of JGME was released in September 2009; the first two issues are available for open access at www.jgme.org.
