Texas Tech of the Permian Basin, Odessa, TX

burks

Nominators had this to say:

Over the past twelve years, Dr. Burks has been directly responsible for bringing stability and progress to the Department of Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. Our campus is challenged by having two primary teaching hospitals in adjacent cities twenty miles apart. Dr. Burks has designed a solid curriculum that allows his residents to meet educational objectives using electronic audiovisual links between the two hospitals, small group teaching, traditional hospital rounds, and didactic lecture series. His residents consistently perform above average on standardized testing and board examinations.

Dr. Burks has led an effective recruiting effort that brings high quality medical graduates to this area of whom many elect to stay and practice. He has expanded our program to twelve residents per level and most recently received a five year accreditation for his training program. He personally rotates and supervises resident services in both of our teaching hospitals. Dr. Burks has exerted extraordinary effort in making certain that resident physicians in his program learn and apply evidence based medicine and graduate as competent physicians. His residents respect and recognize him as a mentor, friend, and readily available consultant

As a person Dr. Burks has been a friend, philosopher and guide to many young faculty members, who have benefited both from his experience and wisdom. He is easily accessible to the residents, faculty and program staff. He is an excellent mentor and a constant resident advocate. This is reflected by the three "Best Teacher" awards he was honored with.
