Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award Recipients

Gail H. Manos, MD
Psychiatry
Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Portsmouth, VA

Nominators had this to say:

Dr. Manos is a true role model and mentor. This is very clear in the high quality graduates that complete the NMCP Psychiatry Residency as evident by the fact that the program has had 100% ABPN pass rate for the past five years under her tenure. She, as well, is a mentor and role model for female physicians and psychiatrists, noted by her recent involvement in the 2008 APA Annual Meeting where she served as a panelist for a meeting on "Women in Psychiatry". In her role as teacher, there is no one better. Dr. Manos is constantly sought out for expert supervision and teaching in difficult patient care issues. She has been awarded the Jerome Blackman, M.D. Award for outstanding faculty member repeatedly over the last several years, undoubtedly for her love, passion, and remarkable ability for teaching residents.

Despite her numerous responsibilities, she teaches more resident courses than any other staff psychiatrist, in topics ranging from psychopharmacology, advanced interview skills, psychiatrist as teacher, evidence-based psychiatry, and psychodynamic psychotherapy, most of which are year-long weekly sessions. Her amazing passion and dedication for teaching residents is clearly shown by the fact that she taught courses by teleconference while deployed for six months to Groton, CT in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Dr. Gail Manos is held in the highest regards by her patients, residents, colleagues, the Naval Medical Center, and the military and psychiatry professional communities. I am a better physician, psychiatrist, and human being to have had the privilege of being trained by her and to have worked with her for so many years as not only trainee but colleague. I am humbled by her many accomplishments and the ease with which she manages a myriad of tasks and responsibilities.
