Nominators had this to say:

Dr. Valentine has dedicated his career to the education and mentorship of surgical residents. When he took over as Program Director over 12 years ago, he created "Chief's Conference," which is highly regarded in the residency. This is a case-based conference, where select residents present cases from the prior week, and Dr. Valentine asks questions of the residents in the audience using a format similar to the American Board of Surgery Oral Boards. The impact of this has been profound. Our board pass rate is 100% for the past 5 years and several residents from the past have attributed this exclusively to Dr. Valentine.

Dr. Valentine has an overwhelming administrative schedule, but always finds time to spend with residents. For example, every week he will staff junior residents at the VA hospital. He is one of the few full professors who will dedicate his time to operate with junior residents. He has excellent technical skills, and this provides a unique opportunity for junior residents to learn important basic vascular skills that serve as a foundation for more advanced cases. For senior residents, he is great to operate with because of his calm nature and his vast experience in complicated vascular cases. Every time you scrub with him, you come away with a new skill. Not only is he great to work with in the operating room, but he also serves as a great mentor. It's no secret that Dr. Valentine views himself as our “father." He has a personal investment in our success, not just as surgeons but as human beings. There has been countless times where he stayed late to counsel and encourage residents. His office has an open door policy and he is always available to help you with any issues, not just clinical problems.
