NEW! Call for Applicants: Clinical Learning Environment Toolkit for Formative Assessment

The ACGME is seeking up to 10 ACGME-accredited Sponsoring Institutions to test the first modular component of the new Clinical Learning Environment Toolkit for Formative Assessment. The first module will address the CLER Focus Area of Patient Safety.

The toolkit is a direct response to the GME community’s requests for the CLER Program to expand its reach to multiple participating sites that are part of a single Sponsoring Institution. The toolkit will provide clinical learning environment executives and GME leaders with a framework with which they can continuously conduct their own assessment of all their clinical learning environments to identify improvement opportunities, innovate, and monitor performance in the CLER Focus Areas.

The Review Committees for Internal Medicine and Pediatrics are preparing for a major revision of the Program Requirements for combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics. In particular, the Review Committees invite comments related to specific Requirements or topics that should be addressed as the revised Requirements are developed. The current set of Requirements is available in the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics sections of the ACGME website.

Office Hours for Neurological Surgery Available in New York

Neurological surgery program leaders can meet with the ACGME Review Committee executive director and chair during the Society of Neurological Surgeons 2024 Annual Meeting Saturday, May 18, 2024, in New York, New York.

Appointments will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis and will take place at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel from 12:00-3:30 p.m. Central. Email Associate Executive Director Jennifer Luna with questions or to schedule an appointment. 


Case Log Update for Radiology

The Review Committee for Radiology sent a notification to radiology programs last week announcing upcoming revisions to the ACGME Case Log System for Radiology, which was deployed May 1, 2024. Note: There is no need to re-enter any prior procedural data.

Updates include a new hierarchical nomenclature organized by diagnostic and interventional radiology categories. The Review Committee expects all diagnostic and interventional radiology residents to enter all procedures they perform in their program. Interventional radiology residents should also record all new outpatient interventional radiology clinic encounters. Diagnostic imaging studies should continue to be entered in aggregate based on prior CPT code definitions, and this may be managed by program coordinators rather than by individual residents. Users may need to create new favorites lists for selected procedures. Note that options have been added to log I-131 and parenteral nuclear therapies, as well as hands-on ultrasound cases, and that I-131 and parenteral nuclear therapies recorded in the ACGME Case Log System will not be shared with the American Board of Nuclear Medicine or Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Approval for Authorized User status is not managed by the ACGME.

Updated Surgery Block Diagram Template

Updated guidance, via a fillable block diagram template, is now available for general surgery programs. Programs should ensure that the new format is used and uploaded for the 2024 ADS Annual Update.

COMING SOON! Coordinator Handbook Companion Learning Path in Learn at ACGME

The ACGME is pleased to announce a forthcoming learning path for coordinators, the Coordinator Handbook Companion, a collection of self-paced modules featuring interactive materials based on the new Coordinator Handbook, which will soon be available on the ACGME website. This free resource is designed for both new and more experienced coordinators interested in expanding their knowledge of specific topics, tasks, and responsibilities related to their role. The modules do not need to be completed in any particular order; instead, they are meant to be treated as self-contained resources on specific coordinator job-related topics. While they complement the physical handbook, the contents of the learning path provide an additional opportunity to engage with the topics through interactive activities, such as click-and-reveal interactions, quizzes, and videos.

The Coordinator Handbook Companion will be released in Learn at ACGME in June – stay tuned for updates!

How an Audit-and-Feedback-Based Educational Program Contributed to a Reduction in Environmentally Harmful Waste Anesthetic Gases Among Anesthesiology Residents

Anesthesiologists have been called on to reduce their emission footprint to combat the effects of volatile anesthetics as greenhouse gas emissions. This research article examines a novel audit-and-feedback-based sustainability education program for anesthesiology residents implemented at a Veterans Administration medical center, which resulted in a reduction of fresh gas flow use and extrapolated annual emissions from waste anesthetic gases.

Support for Mental Health and Well-Being in the Transition to Residency

This ACGME News and Views article looks at one of the most challenging transitions in medical education—medical school to residency—and the potential threats to resident mental health and well-being during that time. The authors present several strategies to support residents during this transition, focusing both on the skills residents can learn, as well as the ways in which programs and institutions can play a role in creating a healthy learning environment with interventions to reduce depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation in the early months of residency.


NEXT WEEK! Shaping GME for Program Requirements: Call for Comments

Every 10 years, Review Committees are required to review their specialty-specific Program Requirements to determine necessary revisions. The ACGME Board of Directors has approved a new process for all such major revisions going forward.

The process convenes specialty-specific writing groups, who, along with members of the specialty community and leaders from other specialties and related fields, rigorously and creatively consider what the specialty will look like in the future (recognizing that the future is marked with significant uncertainty). Out of this process, the writing group drafts and proposes revisions to the Program Requirements that will prepare learners for current and future practice.
