Executive and Senior Leadership
Sean O. Hogan, PhD
Sean Hogan joined the ACGME in 2019 and provides leadership for the organization’s research and evaluation agenda with an emphasis on understanding the impact of accreditation requirements on education and quality of care, the transitions between undergraduate and graduate medical education, and the effects of various education and training experiences on the quality of care provided by physicians in early unsupervised practice. Dr. Hogan’s recent research has focused on how the ACGME’s Milestones evaluations correlate with performance in Board exams and unsupervised care, clinical experiences and operative procedures during training, and conflicts of interest in medicine. Prior to joining the ACGME, Dr. Hogan led research and evaluation studies at RTI International. These boutique studies focused on health services delivery, physician practices, adoption of health information technology, and public health interventions for state and federal agencies. He has also led research efforts at the collegiate level, analyzing patterns in student enrollment, retention, and persistence, thereby informing strategies that led to increased graduation and progression into the workforce. Dr. Hogan has served on national and regional boards for the American Association for Public Opinion Research, the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research, and the Illinois Association for Institutional Research. He is a member of the American Medical Association’s National Advisory Board for its ChangeMedEd initiative. Dr. Hogan is a clinical professor of medical education at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He earned his baccalaureate degree in political science at Eastern Illinois University, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in public policy analysis at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
