NEW! ACGME and Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Announce Catalyst Award Partnership; Informational Webinar July 24

Last week, the ACGME and Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation announced a partnership to present the Catalyst Awards for Transformation in Graduate Medical Education. The Catalyst Awards support projects that enhance the clinical learning environment and improve the experience of residents and fellows in one of the three priority areas supported by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation: promoting diversity, equity, and belonging; increasing opportunities to learn in and from high-performing interprofessional teams; and preparing future health professionals to navigate ethical dilemmas. Each project will receive up to $100,000 over 18 months.

The application portal is open on the Macy Foundation website, and all applications are due by Friday, September 20 .

The ACGME hosts a monthly virtual interest group session for GME community members involved in addressing the needs of MUA/Ps, which are places or communities with groups of people who have unmet health or health care needs.

These one-hour Zoom calls will take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. Central and are open to the entire GME community. During these sessions, participants will provide information about efforts in GME and MUA/P, solve for common challenges, and share helpful resources. GME institution and program leaders will connect with peers and ACGME representatives in breakout group.

The window for submitting CLER Visit blackout weeks is open through July 26, 2024 for blocking off dates in the period highlighted below. Sponsoring Institutions can submit up to four blackout weeks during this period.

NEW! Shaping GME: Major Program Requirements Revision for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

The Writing Group for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will begin development of the new Program Requirements later this summer. To inform this effort, the group seeks stakeholder input, in the form of a survey, in several key areas before beginning that work. A background document and the link to the survey can be found in the Shaping GME table on the Review and Comment page.

The deadline for responding to this survey is August 9, 2024.

As part of the ongoing effort to encourage participation of the GME community and the public in the process of reviewing potential new specialties or subspecialties for accreditation, the ACGME offers a 45-day comment period to the community of interest regarding proposed new specialties and subspecialties. Nominees must be enrolled in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program at the time of the appointment and may not serve more than one year beyond completion of that residency or fellowship. The Committee is seeking three new physician members. Candidates must be board certified in internal medicine, pediatrics, or radiology through a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties or certifying board of the American Osteopathic Association. In addition to offering the Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment course in Chicago, the ACGME collaborates with institutions and organizations in the US and abroad to offer scaled, tailored versions of the course. Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment

This course is designed to help participants build effective assessment programs for their residency or fellowship. Sessions are highly interactive and use multiple learning approaches, including simulation practice, peer consultations, and application exercises to provide participants with methods and tools for effective assessment. The course also provides a roadmap for developing an assessment system to assist participants in implementing changes within their own institution.

To give participants maximum opportunity to participate, absorb, and apply course content, the fall/winter course is offered over two, three-day sessions:

  • Session One: September 11-13, 2024
  • Session Two: December 4-6, 2024

Participants register once and attend both sessions.

Direct Observation Toolkit Workshop

Explore the ACGME’s Improving Assessment Using Direct Observation Toolkit with ACGME experts and toolkit authors. The toolkit offers faculty development curricula for institutions that can be adapted to local needs and provides individual faculty members with techniques that will help them become better educators. The toolkit is available at no cost to the GME community through the ACGME’s online learning portal, Learn at ACGME.

The Urgent Need for Reporting Accurate and Fair Student Comparisons in the Medical Student Performance Evaluation

A common criticism of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) is that it provides insufficient objective data for residency program directors to use to distinguish applicants. The authors provide clear best practices for reporting accurate and fair student comparisons in the MSPE.

Lessons in Poverty: An Innovative Learning Workshop for Residents

Using the Learning for Justice lesson plan as a guide, the authors developed the Lessons in Poverty Workshop with interactive scenarios leading residents to a deeper understanding of social determinants of health and how to care for patients in their community.
