As part of the ongoing effort to encourage participation of the GME community and the public in the process of reviewing potential new specialties or subspecialties for accreditation, the ACGME offers a 45-day comment period to the community of interest regarding proposed new specialties and subspecialties. The subspecialty below is currently under consideration. Review the proposal and access the public comment form.

NEXT WEEK! Shaping GME: Major Program Requirements Revision for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

The Writing Group for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will begin development of the new Program Requirements later this summer. To inform this effort, the group seeks stakeholder input, in the form of a survey, in several key areas before beginning that work. A background document and the link to the survey can be found in the Shaping GME table on the Review and Comment page.

The deadline for responding to this survey is August 9, 2024.

Earlier this month, the ACGME and Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation announced a partnership to present the Catalyst Awards for Transformation in Graduate Medical Education. For the third cycle of the Catalyst Awards, selected projects will receive up to $100,000 over 18 months. Successful proposals will design, implement, and evaluate innovative strategies to equip learners with tools, skills, and approaches to help them thrive in the clinical learning environment.
 
The application portal is open, and all applications are due by Friday, September 20.


MUA/P Interest Group: August

The ACGME hosts a monthly virtual interest group session for graduate medical education (GME) community members involved in addressing the needs of MUA/Ps, which are places or communities with groups of people who have unmet health or health care needs.

These one-hour Zoom calls will take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. Central and are open to the entire GME community. During these sessions, participants will provide information about efforts in GME and MUA/P, solve for common challenges, and share helpful resources. GME institution and program leaders will connect with peers and ACGME representatives in breakout groups.


Clinician Educator Journal Club: August

The ACGME's Clinician Educator Journal Club is a monthly online meeting on the third Thursday of each month gathering together current and future clinician educators, authors, and ACGME staff members to discuss the latest journal articles and timely topics in medical education.

Give Feedback on Use of the Milestones

After 10 years of Milestones, the ACGME is in the process of a major program evaluation that includes surveys and interviews. The outcomes of this work will set the direction for changes to Milestones 3.0. A large multi-disciplinary program evaluation advisory committee is committed to publishing the results and a final report of the recommendations. The ACGME is seeking program directors, associate program directors, or clinical competency committee members for residency programs to participate in structured interviews regarding the Milestones program. The results of the interviews will be instrumental in development of the national survey that will go to all program directors in early 2025.

The team particularly needs participants from the following specialties:

ACGME Seeks Appeals Panel Members

The ACGME is seeking physicians to serve on standing Appeals Panels for the following specialties:

  • Dermatology
  • Preventive Medicine
  • Vascular Surgery

APPLICANT CRITERIA

  • Must be certified by the relevant American Board of Medical Specialties member board or American Osteopathic Association certifying board.
  • Must be able to devote sufficient time to the Appeals Panel work.
  • Should have at least three years' experience as a program director, department chair, associate/assistant program director, and/or core faculty member.
    • Applicants not currently serving in one of these roles may be considered if they held one of these positions within the last three years.
  • Applicants’ programs must have a status of Continued Accreditation.

Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment

This course is designed to help participants build effective assessment programs for their residency or fellowship. Sessions are highly interactive and use multiple learning approaches, including simulation practice, peer consultations, and application exercises to provide participants with methods and tools for effective assessment. The course also provides a roadmap for developing an assessment system to assist participants in implementing changes within their own institution.

To give participants maximum opportunity to participate, absorb, and apply course content, the fall/winter course is offered over two, three-day sessions:

  • Session One: September 11-13, 2024
  • Session Two: December 4-6, 2024

Participants register once and attend both sessions.

Acting Professionally: Applying Medical Improv to Build Adaptive Communication Skills and Empathy to Address Interphysician Conflict

As part of the June issue’s New Ideas article collection, this pilot study aimed to determine if a medical improv curriculum could increase residents’ perceived skills in empathy and professional adaptive communication to prevent and resolve inter-physician conflict.


ACGME Seeks Public Member

The following Committee seeks its next public member for a six-year term beginning July 1, 2025. Public members share the perspective of the public, foster public accountability, enrich the work of the Committee through outside expertise, and create transparency. While nominees cannot be physicians, other health care practitioners are permitted if they are not employed by an organization with ACGME-accredited or -recognized residency or fellowship programs.
