A general overview webinar about the Physician Data Initiative and its recommendations will be held December 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Central.

The ACGME, American Medical Association, and Association of American Medical Colleges launched the Physician Data Initiative as a collaborative effort aimed at improving the health of the nation by better understanding the dynamics of the physician workforce. Founded in 2021, this initiative focuses on establishing standardized practices for categorizing, collecting, reporting, and sharing sociodemographic data.

NEXT WEEK! ACGME Seeks Appeals Panel Members

The ACGME is seeking physicians to serve on standing Appeals Panels for the following specialties:

  • Neurological Surgery
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Preventive Medicine
  • Vascular Surgery

Applicant Criteria

  • Must be certified by the relevant American Board of Medical Specialties member board or American Osteopathic Association certifying board.
  • Must be able to devote sufficient time to the Appeals Panel work.
  • Should have at least three years' experience as a program director, department chair, associate/assistant program director, and/or core faculty member.
  • Applicants not currently serving in one of these roles may be considered if they held one of these positions within the last three years.
  • Applicants’ programs must have a status of Continued Accreditation.

NEXT WEEK! Comment on Draft Preliminary Recommendations from the Advisory Commission on Additional Licensing Models

The Advisory Commission on Additional Licensing Models, co-chaired by the ACGME, Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), and Intealth, has released draft preliminary recommendations for public comment, aimed at guiding state medical boards and policymakers in developing new licensing pathways for internationally trained physicians. The recommendations, which focus on eligibility requirements, are available for feedback until December 6, 2024, with final guidance expected in early 2025.

Initial Experiences With a 2-Stage Residency Interview Process

A large general surgery program offered virtual interviews to selected candidates after thorough holistic review, and then a choice of virtual or in-person interview to all candidates still interested in the program, with ranking based solely on second interview scores. Applicants found this approach fair and beneficial, and faculty members found it feasible.  

ACGME Accreditation, Resident Unions, and the Centrality of Patient Welfare

The authors of this News and Views article overview the limits of accreditation and how they tie in with the clinical learning environment. The authors offer a vision for the future in which institutions transform into settings where professional values undergird systems that actually put patients first.


Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment

This course is designed to help participants build effective assessment programs for their residency or fellowship and will provide a roadmap for developing an assessment system to assist participants in implementing changes within their own institution. Sessions are highly interactive and use multiple learning approaches, including simulation practice, peer consultations, and application exercises to provide participants with methods and tools for effective programs of assessment. Topics include assessment methods, feedback, direct observation, clinical competency committees, and more.

The spring 2025 course will be offered in Chicago, Illinois, in a six-day session. Registration will close March 3, 2025.
