ACGME Hosted Institutional Leaders for 2024 National Learning Community of Sponsoring Institutions and Clinical Learning Environments Meeting

October 10, 2024

More than 300 designated institutional officials, institutional coordinators, and other members of the graduate medical education (GME) community attended the ACGME’s third National Learning Community of Sponsoring Institutions and Clinical Learning Environments meeting, Building Connections, Leading Change, at the ACGME Conference Center and online October 8 and 9, 2024.

The first day provided highlights from across the ACGME, with department leaders focusing on activities and initiatives that impact GME and clinical learning environment (CLE) leaders. After hearing the latest information from various ACGME departments, participants enjoyed a plenary presentation from leaders of Dell Medical School – University of Texas at Austin and Ascension describing their journey toward integration as they optimize their health system for learning. A networking reception and dinner followed, allowing attendees to share ideas with colleagues and build new connections.

Sessions on the second day highlighted advancements in GME and CLEs. Participants learned how some CLEs are leading change by engaging residents and fellows in real patient safety event investigations and continuous quality improvement activities, and by taking an interprofessional approach to addressing well-being at the health system level. Additional sessions engaged participants in breakout discussions about approaches to proposed new requirements for GME and CLE integration as part of the major revision of the ACGME Institutional Requirements. The formal program ended with a town hall session featuring staff and volunteer leadership of the Institutional Review Committee, the Clinical Learning Environment Review Program Evaluation Committee, and the Department of Sponsoring Institutions and Clinical Learning Environment Programs. In-person and online attendees stayed on for three concurrent post-meeting sessions on the topics of organizational professionalism; Sponsoring Institution-based fellowships in health care administration, leadership, and management; and medically underserved areas and populations.

Save the date for next year’s meeting, to be held in Chicago and online October 9-10, 2025.
