ACGME International (ACGME-I) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) are pleased to announce the release of the International Clinical Learning Environment Pathways to Excellence: Expectations to Achieve Safe and High-Quality Patient Care.
The document serves as a tool to promote discussions and actions to optimize graduate medical education (GME) and patient care. It was adapted from the ACGME’s CLER Pathways to Excellence to fit an international context – especially for the 24 current ACGME-I-accredited Sponsoring Institutions spanning many countries.
An executive summary of the documenthas been published in the February 2025 issue of The Journal of Graduate Medical Education.
In 2023-2024, ACGME and ACGME-I convened a series of regional gatherings of GME and patient safety and quality leaders from most ACGME-I-accredited Sponsoring Institutions. During the meetings in Singapore, Athens, and Abu Dhabi, participants collaborated in developing the document, offering individual perspectives, and providing valuable amendments, all while strengthening connections within this unique group of dedicated GME leaders.
A fourth and final meeting of the group took place in Chicago to finalize the document, demonstrating the potential of collaborative efforts across the ACGME-I community.
The goal of this document is to foster discussions within the ACGME-I and wider global GME community on the important topics around clinical learning environments; it is not designed as a prelude to introducing a formal Clinical Learning Environment Review Program for ACGME-I.
Learn more and access the document on the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Program page under “Improvements and Initiatives.”
